Here’s a breakdown of the acceptable forms of identification you might need to get something notarized in California:

Primary Forms of Identification

  1. State-Issued Driver’s License or ID Card
    • One of the most commonly accepted forms of ID is a valid California issued driver’s license or identification card. It must be current or issued within the last five years and contain your photo, signature, and physical description.
  2. U.S. Passport
    • A current U.S. passport is another widely accepted form of identification. Like the driver’s license, it must include your photo, signature, and physical description.
  3. Foreign Passport
    • A foreign passport that has been stamped by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service is acceptable, provided it is current or issued within the last five years, and has a photo, signature, and physical description.
  4. Military Identification Card
    • If you are a member of the military, a military ID card with your photo, signature, and physical description is a valid form of identification for notarization purposes.

Secondary Forms of Identification

If you don’t have any of the primary forms of identification, there are secondary options, as follows:

  1. Inmate Identification
    • For inmates currently incarcerated, a state correctional facility identification card issued by the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is acceptable.
  2. Two Credible Witnesses
    • In situations where you do not have any acceptable forms of identification at all, you may bring two credible witnesses who know you personally. These witnesses must possess and present valid ID as mentioned above, and they must swear/affirm that they know you and that you are whom you claim to be.
